Maud Lewis

Digby County folk Artist, Maud Lewis was born in Yarmouth County in 1903. Lewis died in 1970.

Maud Lewis lived with her husband, Everett, in a tiny house in Marshalltown, Digby County, a few miles from Weymouth. They had no electricity, no running water and few comforts. To earn extra money she

sold her primitive paintings for $4 or $5, often exhibiting them outside their tiny home near the main highway.

Maud used simple and straightforward materials -- wallboard and tubes of Tinsol, an oil based paint. She would cover the piece of wallboard with a coat of white, draw an outline of what she was going to paint and add the colour (taking them directly from the tube).
